Deep clean or standard clean, and how to tell which you need
The difference is not effort or attention. It is reach. A standard clean covers what you touch, a deep clean covers what you do not.
Every cleaning company sells both and most explain the difference badly, usually with a vague sentence about being more thorough. That is not a difference you can act on.
Here is the distinction that actually decides it: a standard clean maintains a home that is already clean. A deep clean resets a home that is not. If nobody has cleaned behind the taps in a year, more care during a standard clean will not fix it, because those surfaces are not on the standard list at all.

How long each takes
Roughly, across the Toronto market and consistent with our own jobs: a standard clean of an average home runs about one and a half to three hours. A deep clean of the same home runs about four to eight.
That gap is the honest reason for the price difference. A deep clean is not a standard clean performed more carefully, it is two to three times the labour.
When you need a deep clean first
You need one, rather than merely wanting one, if any of these is true:
- Nobody has cleaned the home thoroughly in six months or more.
- You are starting a recurring service for the first time.
- There is visible buildup: hard water film on shower glass, grease film on the wall behind the hob, dust on top of door frames.
- You are moving in or out, in which case you want the move-out clean, which goes further again.
- After a renovation, in which case neither is right and you want post-renovation cleaning, because construction dust needs multiple passes and will keep resettling.
If none of those apply and the home has been maintained, a standard clean is the correct choice and paying for a deep clean is money spent on surfaces that are already clean.
How often after that
Once a home has been reset, the buildup that justifies a deep clean takes a long time to come back, provided the standard cleans are actually happening.
For a home on a weekly or biweekly schedule, most people never need another full deep clean, because the standard visits keep the buildup from forming. On a monthly schedule, once a year is a reasonable rhythm. With no recurring service at all, roughly twice a year, and you will notice the difference between the two visits sharply.

Add-ons like the inside of the oven and the fridge are separate from both. They are not automatically included in a deep clean, which is the most common misunderstanding about what a deep clean covers.
Questions people ask about this
What is the difference between a deep clean and a standard clean?
A standard clean covers the surfaces you use day to day: floors, counters, bathrooms, dusting, kitchen. A deep clean adds the surfaces that build up slowly and are not part of a normal visit: baseboards, door frames, inside the microwave, hard water buildup, behind and under what can be moved.
How often should I get a deep clean?
Once at the start of a recurring service, then rarely if the recurring cleans are frequent. On a monthly schedule, about once a year. With no recurring service, about twice a year.
Does a deep clean include inside the oven and fridge?
Not automatically, with us or with most companies. Both are add-ons because both are substantial jobs on their own. Add them at booking if you want them.
Is a deep clean the same as a move-out clean?
No. A move-out clean goes further: inside every cupboard and closet, appliances moved and cleaned behind, and it assumes an empty home. It is priced above a deep clean for that reason.
